Rice for students attending Long Hải Centre school
This project started in 2010 as a monthly collection and shopping trip by the teachers and staff at ILA Vietnam - Vũng Tàu Teaching Centre. At that time dry goods and other cooking essentials - rice, noodles, cooking oil, milk, soup powder, etc. - were purchased to help the kitchen at Long Hải Centre provide one meal per day for 110 students.
The project continues to enjoy support from a circle of friends here in Vietnam. These days it has switched focus to help provide 10kg of rice each month to the families of the students. The objective is to remove parental pressure on the children to skip school and go to work by providing an incentive that benefits the whole family in the immediate term and individual students over the longer term. The rice is purchased locally in Long Hải town, meaning that some external funds are also entering the local economy.
But ... we have only able to support a small part of the costs, meaning that the centre budget must make up the shortfall each month. Our aim is to completely fund this project - here's the breakdown:
1kg of rice = approximately 16,000 VND or $0.75 AUD or 0.58 Euro or $0.77 USD or 0.48 GBP
10kg of rice = approximately 160,000 VND or $7.50 AUD or 5.8 Euro or $7.70 USD or 4.80 GBP
110 children/families = 17,600,000 VND or ....
